This was a paper I wrote for my sophomore year religion class. Now if it was Sr. Mary I am sure I would have failed. But it was Mary Freeland and I got an A+ on it. I’m sure she was happy to get an assignment that wasn’t a “typical” (boring) 2 page written paper.
Note the use of a typewriter and the rub on type
So yeah, figure this out… went from nearly failing my freshman year religion class to getting an A the next year…
Holiday Display Vandalized in Olean NY
Holiday Display Vandalized in Olean
Police in Olean are investigating the vandalism of a holiday display.
Police
say someone opposed to a Wiccan pentacle decided to express his or her
opinion by running it down Monday night and then sped off into the
night.
Olean Mayor David Carucci says the vandalism happened around 10:15 last night.
“Someone has backed up over the curb and run over the pentacle,” Carucci told News 4.
Carucci is quick to criticize the action, and is hopeful police will soon find the person responsible.
Police, meanwhile, are treating it as a hate crime.
“We’re
going to be treating this as a hate crime,” said Olean Police Chief
Terry Schnell. “This has gone far too long, this is getting
ridiculous.”
The pentacle stood only a few feet away from a
nativity scene that sparked a public debate about the separation of
church and state.
The owner of the pentacle, April Garlow,
says as long as the nativity scene remains on public ground in front of
Olean city hall, so too shall the symbol of her Wiccan faith.
She’s
disappointed, though, that an attempt to acknowledge different
religious beliefs has apparently divided her community even further.
“This is supposed to be the season of peace and goodwill towards men and I don’t see any of that,” said Garlow.
Olean
police say the person responsible for crashing into the pentacle drove
away in a black Ford pickup, and they’re asking anyone with information
to call them.
The number for the Olean Police Department is 716-376-5678.
Pentacle Display in Olean Damaged; Hate-Crime Investigation Opened

A holiday display stirring up a debate in Cattaraugus County was damaged Monday night. According
to Olean Police, someone backed over the pentacle around 10:10pm. No
one was injured. Police say the person responsible for the damage drove
away in a black Ford pick-up truck.
Now, Olean Police Chief
Terry Schnell says they are taking the matter seriously and are
investigating it as a possible hate-crime. He will be contacting
authorities Tuesday morning to determine the next step in the case.
Just weeks ago, some residents in the Town of Olean were upset over a Nativity Scene in front of City Hall.
The
Mayor ruled that the Nativity would stay put and that as a compromise
people of other faiths could display their own religious items.
“Some
people came in and said it was their constitutional right to put
something up and I said ‘be my guest’,” said David Carucci, Olean
Mayor.
April Garlow took the mayor up on his offer. And right
next to the manger of baby Jesus stands a pentacle; a symbol of the
Wiccan religion.
“I’m being made out like I did something wrong,” said Garlow. “That was a solution to a problem they created.”
Garlow says the pentacle is a symbol of spiritual balance, but she put it up to prove a point.
“The government should not be promoting one religion over the other,” she said.
The mayor’s reaction?
“Fine, a menorah can go up tomorrow,” he said. “It’s a symbol of the season.”
It’s
a symbol of the season and the talk of the town. Some visitors even
placed small nativity scenes under the pentacle, sending a message.
“All
this is, is a symbol,” Mayor Carucci told 2 On Your Side’s Josh Boose.
“You can buy a Christmas card with a nativity scene on it or one with a
Santa and reindeer on it.”
“But is it right for a city to say,
we’re going to put a Christian tradition symbol in front of city hall?
Is that right,” Boose asked Carucci.
“Of course, as long as you’ve invited everyone else and we’ve invited everyone,” Carucci replied.
The city and the mayor have stated that they would openly welcome all religious displays on this piece of public property. Which is how they should be doing it. I have no problems with the displays on public property as long as all religions that want to be represented is. This is not a case of where the city is only allowing the Christian themes (which is all to common in this country). Although I do believe that I’m losing brain cells reading the WGRZ forums about this news story.

Update on Hanukkah ham ad
Grocery Store Goofs With Hanukkah Ham Ad
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: December 7, 2007
Filed at 10:18 a.m. ET
NEW YORK (AP) — This was REALLY not kosher.
A grocery store in Manhattan made a food faux pas, advertising hams as ”Delicious for Chanukah.”
Chanukah — an alternate spelling for Hanukkah — is the eight-day Jewish holiday that began Tuesday evening, and hams — as well as pork and other products from pigs — can’t be eaten under Jewish dietary laws.
A woman who saw the mistake over the weekend at the Balducci’s store on 14th Street took pictures of the signs and posted them on her blog.
Jennifer Barton, director of marketing, told The Associated Press on Thursday that the signs were changed as soon as the error was noted.
She issued an apology on the company Web site, saying the company would be reviewing its employee training.

There is enough pattern to the socks to keep me from getting bored.
Colors are a bit more pastel then I’m used to wearing, but I like the subtlety with this pattern.
