The Knitting Circle Shows Its Chic

TEVA DURHAM is an unlikely idol, a soberly outfitted, plain-talking mother with a passion for quirky yarns. But to her fans, who snap up her how-to-knit books by the tens of thousands, Ms. Durham is the undisputed mistress of stitchery.

Those admirers, often young and aesthetically inclined, follow her patterns — casting on, increasing, decreasing — with unwavering fidelity. As well they might. Ms. Durham’s artfully crafted stockings and skirts, open-work dresses and cardigans vie in style and intricacy with many of their counterparts on the fashion runways.

Just a few years ago, the assertion that hand-stitched garments could compete with designer wares would have raised derisive hoots from the fashion set, which viewed the needle crafts as the domain of ladies in buns and harlequin glasses. As Ms. Durham acknowledged mildly, “People still think of knitting as, you know, a homey hobby.”

Is there anything that can’t be found on youtube?

I found this video on YouTube.  It was sung by the Canadian Artist Doug Cameron and I remember it got a fair amount of CFNY play during the early 80s.  He seemed to disappear after this song.

Radio and stupid parents

I spent a summer in Boulder, Colorado in 1993 (working at Colorado Shakespeare Festival).  While there I fell in love with KBCO.  I have spent the past 14 years trying to find a radio station remotely close.  When we lived in Texas (and got DSL) I streamed it on a regular basis.  It always has an eclectic playlist (I laugh- radio playlist= DJ randomly picking songs to play).  They are the only radio station who 1. plays David Wilcox (not the Canadian one) 2. has had him in for live studio sessions.  Did I mention that artists playing in Denver/ Boulder areas come in for live music sets?   The Lake comes close- but isn’t KBCO.

This afternoon I went to the WBFO main page to stream NPR.  A link intrigued me- what was this WBFO XPoNential?  A second WBFO station available on HD radio (which we don’t have… haven’t even looked at them since I rarely listen to local radio- last time I really did was back in October during the snowstorm and realized how annoying & whiny WBEN listeners and callers are) and on-line.  So far it looks like an eclectic playlist- not a large one (they seem to set up 4 hour blocks of music and repeat it)- but will be interesting to see how it plays out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now on to stupid parents.  Last week there was a major accident near Rochester that killed 5 recent high school graduates.  They were violating NY law by driving after the teenage driving curfew & by carrying underage passengers.  (I would have to double check exact wording- but as part of the NY graduated driving laws, there are time of day limits, limits as to passengers and ages, i.e. can drive after a certain time with an adult over 21).  Yes it was a tragedy- I would not want to be their parents.  But to get to my rant.
From the WKBW website:
Buffalo Police Officer Carl Andolina was involved in a motorcycle accident early Wednesday morning in Amherst. Andolina was heading home on North French Road with his girlfriend after getting food for a July 4th picnic, when investigators say a 17-year-old driver made an illegal turn. He allegedly cut them off, forcing Andolina to swerve and lose control.
Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson says, “The handlebar of the motorcycle went into his right thigh, piercing an artery, causing significant muscle damage. He lost a significant amount of blood at the scene and was rushed to ECMC, and they had to perform emergency surgery to repair the veins and stop the bleeding.”…
…Gipson says, “We are just hopeful and pray that Carl can make a full recovery. It’s going to take some time. There’s going to have to be a significant amount of rehabilitation to his right leg.” His girlfriend was released from the hospital with minor injuries. The 17-year-old driver received two tickets, including one for driving after 9 pm with a junior license.
The local (and national news organizations) have ALL made a big deal about the Fairport deaths- and all have included the fact they were driving illegally.  Barely a week later ANOTHER teenager driving ILLEGALLY is the cause of an accident.  Where were the parents?  Are they that oblivious to the fact they their child was breaking the law by driving after midnight?  Luckily their child did not kill Officer Andolina- but generally when a car hits a motorcycle the car wins.  That is how Jimbo Freeland died.
Rant over.
From another board
A random question from another board I’m part of “Were you popular in high school?” That is such a loaded question. I’m sure had I gone to a real high school my answers would have been different- but Sacred Heart was such a screwed up place. Academically it wasn’t the best place (I always wondered why St. Joe’s and Canisius had much better academic programs…) and if you didn’t suck up to the right teacher you were ignored.
So my responses:
I went to an all-girls Catholic High School.
I wasn’t rich enough to be part of the popular crowd. Plus I really had no urge to be an alcoholic or coke head. (Did I mention that it was not uncommon for classmates to drink during the day?) The admin also had a habit of treating certain people better then others- so if you were smart and sucked up to certain teachers you could do things like yearbook or newspaper- needless to say I never did yearbook since I wasn’t “good enough”. If this says anything about my HS- had a teacher my senior year who told me that she didn’t think I would “make it” at the college of my choice.
I had a few “friends”- but 1. they tended to live on the other side of town & 2. by the time I got done with the school day the last thing I wanted to do was have anything to do with anyone I went to school with.
I got along with most everyone- but didn’t mean I wanted to “hang out” with them. Plus by my junior year I was doing a lot of volunteering at a local Performing Arts Center at one of the colleges here so I was hanging out with college aged theatre geeks. My senior year I got to listen to classmates “gay bash” (in a religion class no less)- I spoke up since I had any number of “gay/ lesbian” friends (like I cared who they slept with…). By the end of the class I was pissed and went to the teacher (who did not stand up for me or even said anything about “it may not be accepted by the Catholic Church but they are people too”) who told me “they aren’t as worldly as you”. Two months later, two girls who wanted to go “stag” to the prom were called into the principal’s office and accused of being lesbians.
Plus my junior year a classmate killed herself- the administration basically ignored it- we did have “counselors” available the day after it happened, but nothing after that. They did not want her photo in the yearbook or any acknowledgement of her.
It makes me wonder how in the middle of this Mary Freeland lasted as long as she did- the fact that Mary could see pass all the crap & stereotypes the other teachers and admin pushed on us.
Did I mention I also went to High School (for a year) with Heather Tallchief?
