Motorcycle ride to raise funds to aid Parete

A motorcycle ride will be held Aug. 19 to raise money for injured Buffalo Police Officer Patricia Parete.

The 70-mile ride, dubbed the Patty Parete Pride Ride Poker Run, will start at noon at American Harley-Davidson, 1149 Erie Ave., North Tonawanda.

Registration, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, is $10.

Participants will receive a map of the route, a chance to win door prizes and admission to a party after the ride at 5 p.m. in the Cozumel Grill, 153 Elmwood Ave., where Parete was a regular patron.

Nonriders can attend the party for a donation of $10.

Parete and her partner, Police Officer Carl Andolina, were shot Dec. 5 while investigating reports of a fight near West Chippewa Street and Elmwood Avenue.

Parete suffered severe spinal injuries and was paralyzed from the neck down. Andolina recovered from his wounds and has been leading efforts to raise money for Parete’s treatment and recovery.

Proceeds from the event will be used to build Parete a new home with full handicapped access, with the remainder covering living costs.

Parete currently is undergoing therapy in New Jersey.

Organizers expect the event to attract about 1,000 riders.

The fundraiser is sponsored by Cozumel Grill, American Harley-Davidson, Niagara Falls HOG Chapter, RPM Magazine and 103.3 FM, The Edge.

Marriage… or when will the Buffalo News get with the Times

I have not made my feelings towards the Buffalo “News” hidden. While I know there are worse newspapers out there (the Sherman TX Herald Democrat, the Dunkirk Observer, etc.), the Buffalo News is a pretty poor newspaper for the second largest city in New York. That being said, the New York Times On-line is generally a daily read for me. At least I can get fairly up to date reporting there (when I’m not obsessively watching CNN… because I have to watch the DIY network from time to time… and not even going to go into my Degrassi fandom).

A few months ago, the Snooze (as we lovingly refer to the Bflo News around here) went from “free” wedding announcements to paid ones. That was one of the highlights of the Sunday paper… to see who I knew got married, to make fun of ugly wedding dresses, etc. Now the only ones who are in the paper are ones willing to spend the $ to get into it.  (although did see the announcement of an HS classmate a few weeks ago… for her second marriage and it was a bit over the top)

One thing that the Snooze hasn’t start to do is running commitment ceremonies or marriage announcements for same sex couples. Marriage is legal for everyone in Mass. and in Canada (just over the river). The New York Times runs them- in fact there are two announcements / stories on the front page of the Wedding Pages there today. Here is one and here is the other.

Someone correct me if the Snooze has run same sex announcements and I’ve missed it.

Of course I’m just one of those crazy liberals who believes in equal rights for all…

Old Posters!

The quality of these are not the best.. I’ll admit.. but it was a quick and dirty photo job… I’m just surprised they were still floating around the house- err wait, what am I saying, I think Jimmy Hoffa could be in the attic and we not know about it…

Funk Monsters and Woman

I honestly don’t know why I picked up that show poster. Obviously I was too young to go to the show (I was 13…). I think because I thought the poster was cool and the band had a cool name. The coloring was my artistic interpretation. But check out the Mark Freeland’s Graffiti Art. I also love the picture and little promo blurb about them playing at a St. Joe’s dance. (In full disclosure, I did attend two St. Joe’s dances while in high school- they were total meat markets- that and I could barely stand some of my classmates during the week when they were sober… dealing with them drunk was *not* my idea of fun… St. Joe’s reserved the right to not allow anyone drunk to enter but they didn’t really enforce it)

We Killed Mc Kinley

I did go to the We Killed McKinley show though. That was an amazing show. I do wonder what happened to some of the bands that appeared… like The Goo Goo Dolls…

Famous or unknown artist

Found this quiz thanks to Jennifer.  I scored a 92%.  I called one an unknown artist when it was a known artist.  A few other fun quizzes as well

Art & Culture

We had a busy weekend.

Saturday we all went to East Aurora for the Roycroft Summer Festival.  The East Aurora arts association was holding their show in conjunction with the Roycrofters (across the street at the school). I don’t like to speak unwell of other artists- but the East Aurora assn stuff was nice… in the bland definition of the word nice.  A lot of watercolor flowers… photography was nice… but a lot of flowers.  There was nothing that said “buy me”.

The Roycroft side… everything was amazing.  I mentally spent a few thousand dollars…  There were woodworkers, printmakers, jewelers… I was in lust.  Plus I have the date of this year’s Knox farm fiber festival.  (They were there selling hand spun fibers- I loved that each skein was labeled with the name of the animal the wool came from).

I did try to convince DH that we had to stop at the Fisher-Price store… but no luck.

Last night we went to see “All’s Well That Ends Well” at Shakespeare in Delaware Park.  It was a lovely production.  I missed most of the first part because the only way the boy would sleep was on me… with me lying down on the hard ground.  But once again, Buffalo is one big living room.  The person in front of us is in the St. Joe’s choir with Ash.  One of the actors was a former acting teacher of mine (I hate admitting that I had an acting teacher… because I *am not* an actor).  Then also sitting below us was good old Mr. Steve- my former lighting instructor (note, me and lighting design was not a good combo- see my comment about acting- I could do a lighting design if I had to, but not something I enjoy)/ tech director at Fredonia.  We chatted a bit, Tom wandered over, and now I FEEL OLD.  I remember when Steve’s son was a little kid- now he’s all grown up- ditto with Tom’s kids.  The boy did seem to enjoy the second act- sitting on Ash’s lap watching the production.
