Sewing on the rise?

I just got done watching a very interesting report on the CBS early show about the rise of sewing among women. Sewing as a whole declined during the 60s and 70s when women “gave up the machine”. I I know some many people in my generation (born late 60s and early 70s) who do not know how to sew. This is despite being one of the last generations to actually have home ec (err I forgot, it was called “life skills” or some junk like that when I was in middle school). I know I didn’t sew (or craft) for a number of years (OK, not really having a working sewing machine while in TX did not help), and did not take up kitting & crochet until I had been back up in Buffalo. There is something very calming about playing with fibers- whether it be fabric or yarn. I also see it as paying homage to the women who came before me – not only my mother and grandmother (who both did crochet/ quilted/ etc.) but all women. There is also a bit of rebellion – instead of letting corporate America tell me what I should be buying or wearing I make the choice myself- and if it falls apart it’s my own fault, not the fault of the child laborer.

Although having worked in theatre, I had to know how to use a sewing machine and a table saw…
