Rub a dub dub Three Maids at the Tub

Another vintage pretty from the Ingalls’ Illustrated Catalogue.  These laundry bags were made of linen with designs stamped on them.  The original size of the bags was 18″x26″.

Buttons buttons & buttons

Actually not too many buttons- these were part of the estate sale finds of yesterday.  An interesting mix:

There are a few bone types, a few military types including one that is what I think is a Canadian Military button. The two ones that are most interesting are the dragon one and one from the Buffalo Fire Department:

A few estate sale finds

I was able to get out of the house today and hit up an estate sale.  Estate sales tend to be very interesting- I never know what I will find at one.  This one was a case of the person had recently died (as in, there was stuff from the fridge in the garbage) and I went in search of “crafty” stuff.  I have learned that whenever a sale advertises “crafty” stuff it can mean anything from a dusty sewing kit to bags of acrylic yarns and who knows what else.
Sometimes I’ve gotten lucky- like the day I found the Fleisher’s Knitting & Crochet Manual #13
but most of the time I walk away empty handed.
The “craft” selection today was a bit disorganized- if I had been into plastic canvas work I could have made off like a bandit.  But I found a few things:

First was a Griswold #5 cast iron frying pan
I did find some fun sewing things- Vintage Hook and eye sets:

Vintage sewing needle packages- I love the vintage graphics- so much more exciting then the boring Walmart packaging of today:

I also found a couple of vintage cookbooks: The first is the Metropolitan Life Cook Book from 1922- the hints are great (and show how life was before refrigerators in homes):

The Little Book of Excellent Recipes by the Mystery Chef looks to be dated from the early 1930s- some great graphics in it and now I can look up how to cook a Scotch Steak & Kidney Pie

Thift shop score of the day:

I don’t normally check the shoes when wandering the thrifts (the whole usually filled with shoes from Payless/ Kmart/ Walmart) but today the shoe rack called to me at Amvets.

I saw them.

I’ve only been lusting over them for nearly 20 years.

I couldn’t try them on (wasn’t wearing socks… sighs 20 years out of HS and still hate wearing them- used to have to wear socks, every day…)

But I figured for $3.98 if they didn’t fit could always ebay them.

But got home, found some socks and well…

Only 3.98!

Only 3.98!

I am now the proud owner of a pair of 20 hole black Dr. Marten’s.

Thrift store sunday edition

Went to the thrifts today and found some knitting and crochet patterns.

They run from being cool to OMG I’m scared.

First the good:

pine
Dates from 1946

ms
copyright 1940. Check out the picture blown up… he’s smoking! And damn goodwill for marking the price in marker

mc
3 Total of these- mostly filet and doily type crochet.

Now for the scary:

Yup, what all the well dressed plants are wearing this year.

Image5
Poor baby. There are a couple of cute patterns in this booklet, but outweighed by the fug.

Image6
Why… just why… no wonder crochet has such a bad rep.

Thrift store crochet booklet find

Not only is it the Granny Square… but it’s making stuffed animals out of granny squares. It screams 1970s (it’s from 1977)… plus it had a pattern cut from a 1971 Workbasket and another one from the newspaper.

Thrift Store Finds

norway sweater

Originally uploaded by swampcrone.

Found this sweater at Salvation Army last night. Cardigan knit in one piece, sleeves knit in the round. It’s marked “Handmade in Norway”.

There is a small hole in the back but I should be able to fix it.

Bad photo but hey, was too lazy to get out the camera so used the cam.
